Bangalore, Dec 10: Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar, the president of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) passed away on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Wodeyar, the scion of the Mysore royal family, was on December 1, elected as the president of the KSCA. He and Brijesh Patel had joined hands to contest this year's KSCA elections and had swept the polls. Wodeyar had beaten Sadananda Maiya 923-428 votes.

The 60-year-old Wodeyar died at a private hospital in Bangalore. He was born on February 20, 1953. He was Mysore University cricket team's captain.

"Wodeyar was declared dead around 3.30 p.m. after our doctors failed to revive his heart which suffered a cardiac arrest," Vikram hospital in-charge K Madan Kumar told IANS.

Wodeyar, who was staying in his palatial Bangalore Palace in the city centre with his two sisters and other family members, was brought to the hospital around 2 p.m. in an unconscious state, IANS report added.

"As Wodeyar's heart was not beating, we did a cardio-pulmonary resuscitation to revive it but could not. He was admitted into the cardio care unit and put on ventilator to make his heart beat. When all efforts to revive him failed, our chief cardiologist Ranganath Nayak declared him dead," Kumar said.

"He was a very happy man when we won the recently concluded elections. He had definite plans for the next three years and was very keen to start implementing them at the earliest. This is really unfortunate. Our thoughts are with the family as of now," said Brijesh in a media statement.

"The KSCA and its Managing Committee offers its deepest condolences to the bereaved family," Brijesh, the former India batsman, added.

On December 1, speaking after his victory, Wodeyar had thanked all the members and vowed to work for the development of cricket. "I would like to thank all the members for electing us. Brijesh-Wodeyar group is unbeatable in KSCA," he had said.

According to KSCA officials, Wodeyar attended the association's first managing committee meeting on Thursday (December 5). He was last seen at the KSCA office in M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday (December 7).

Wodeyar was elected as a Member of Parliament to Lok Sabha four times from Mysore.

In 2007, Wodeyar was elected for the first time as KSCA president for a three-year term. He had won against former India captain GR Viswanath. In 2010, he was defeated by former India skipper Anil Kumble.

Wodeyar is survived by his wife Pramoda Devi. He has no children. Wodeyar was the last king of Mysore royal family.
