The selectors named a 15-man squad to face Odisha from December 14 to 17 at the Wankhede Stadium. Nayar was give the responsibility to lead the team against Jharkhand but they conceded the first-innings lead.
The selection committee has now altogether axed Nayar from the squad after giving him opportunity to captain the side in just one game. In 10 innings this season, Nayar has scored 200 runs with one half century. He also has nine wickets.
Yesterday, former India fast bowler and managing committee member of Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), Abey Kuruvilla had indicated that Nayar was set to be sacked as skipper. He called it a "blunder".
"Another blunder to sack abhishek nayar as captain after one match. It look like the coach is picking the team," he had tweeted on Tuesday.
Left-handed Nayar made 19 and 1 against Jharkhand. Mumbai held on to a draw but had conceded the first-innings lead after Saurabh Tiwary's double hundred (238). Jharkhand collected three points while Mumbai got one.
MCA's joint secretary Nitin Dalal announced the squad through a media release today.
Pravin Tambe, the 42-year-old legspinner, who was included in the squad for the first time against Jharkhand, has been retained. He will be hoping to make his first-class debut against Odisha.
Mumbai are currently on top of Group A with 20 points from five matches. They have won three matches and two were draws.
