When Dhoni walks out for the toss tomorrow in Johannesburg, he will overtake Ganguly as India's captain in most Test matches. This match will also be first for India without Sachin Tendulkar, who retired last month.
At the moment, Dhoni and Ganguly are tied at 49 matches each. Ganguly led India from 2000 to 2005. Dhoni has been the skipper of the team since 2008.
In 49 Tests so far, Dhoni has won 26. He is the most successful Indian skipper behind Ganguly (21 victories).
Tomorrow's first Test will be Dhoni's 50th as India's leader. In his captaincy, the wicketkeeper-batsman took the team to the number one position in ICC Test rankings.
