Captain Dhoni breaks Ganguly's record

Johannesburg, Dec 18: MS Dhoni broke Sourav Ganguly's record today as India played South Africa in the first Test at the Wanderers Stadium.


With 50th Test in-charge, Dhoni has now surpassed Ganguly as India's captain in most Test matches.

Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat on Wednesday. India went in with three fast bowlers (Zaheer Khan, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma) and one spinner - R Ashwin.

This match is also the first for India without Sachin Tendulkar, who retired last month.

Ganguly led India from 2000 to 2005. Dhoni has been the skipper of the team since 2008. In 49 Tests so far, Dhoni has won 26.

Dhoni is the most successful Indian skipper behind Ganguly (21 victories).

In his captaincy, the wicketkeeper-batsman took the team to the number one position in ICC Test rankings.
