IPL 7: RCB retain Kohli, Gayle, De Villiers; Vettori, Donald coaches

Bangalore, Jan 9: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have retained Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers for the seventh edition of Indian Premier League (IPL 7).

In a media release Thursday, RCB announced that they were retaining the trio as per the new IPL retention rules. The total amount for retaining the trio is Rs 29.5 crores.

Also, RCB have today appointed Daniel Vettori as head coach, Trent Woodhill as batting and fielding coach and Allan Donald as bowling coach. Vettori replaces South African Ray Jennings while Donald takes Venkatesh Prasad's place.

RCB Chairman, Dr. Vijay Mallya, is delighted with the retentions and new appointments.

Commenting on the retention decisions, Dr. Mallya said, "This formidable trio of players have contributed significantly to RCB's past performance and are match-winners in their own right. Their retention means that we have a strong platform to build an exceptional team."

Kohli, who led RCB last year, is very excited to be donning the red, blue and gold again in IPL 7.

Commenting on the recent decisions, he said, "I am happy and honoured to be retained by RCB and it's great to be back to Bangalore, literally my 2nd home now. I am looking forward to working closely with the new Head Coach Dan Vettori. Bowling Coach Allan Donald's experience will add a lot of value. Together with my other retained mates Chris and AB and the rest of the team, I hope to fulfill the faith that RCB and the fans of Bangalore have reposed in me."

Gayle was delighted with the news and said, "Home Again!! I am happy to be retained by RCB and looking forward to the love and affection... Bangalore, here I come again and let's rock!!!!"

AB said that he is, "Honoured to be retained by RCB and extremely happy to be staying in Bangalore. RCB and Bangalore has a special place in my heart and I look forward to contributing to the Team's success, come IPL."

Vettori said, "Having been closely associated with RCB for the last 3 years, I'm very excited by the opportunity to work with this exceptional brand and Virat in delivering on RCB's true potential. My first area of focus will be to work closely with management in developing team composition strategy for the IPL auction."

Donald, popularly known as ‘White Lightening', is currently bowling coach for South Africa and coached Pune Warriors in the last edition of IPL.

"I have followed RCB very closely in previous editions of the IPL and believe they have the potential to go all the way. I hope my experience will guide them in getting there," said Donald.

Woodhill has been credited with moulding David Warner's career as well as emerging Australian talent such as T20 player Nick Maddinson.

He brings vast experience to his portfolio, having served as assistant coach to the New Zealand team, batting consultant to the Pakistan team and currently senior assistant coach with the Melbourne Stars in the Australian Big Bash.
