At stumps, Uttar Pradesh were 221/9, still 128 runs behind Karnataka's first innings score of 349. All nine wickets were taken by the fast bowlers. In today's play 14 wickets fell and all to pace.
It was domination of fast men at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Abhimanyu Mithun (4/70) and captain R Vinay Kumar (3/49) did the most of the damage while HS Sharath (1/20) and Robin Uthappa (1/0) added one scalp each.
In the final session, Sharath had to leave the field after injuring his right shoulder while fielding. Mithun too was off the field briefly with cramps but returned.
Things could have been even worse for the visitors if not for the lower order bailing them out with Piyush Chawla and Parvinder Singh's half centuries.
Parvinder was in sight of a century but fell to the part-time medium pace of Uthappa on the last ball of the day. Parvinder was caught by wicketkeeper CM Gautam for 92 (181 balls, 13x4).
Chawla hit 56 (99 balls, 5x4). The left and right combination of Chawla and Parvinder pulled UP out of deep trouble with a 110-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
UP were reeling at 65/5 but Chawla and Parvinder, enjoying a couple of chances, had a century association. Former India batsman Mohammed Kaif was out for a duck, bowled by Mithun.
Parvinder, in the company of Ankit Rajpoot (1 not out, 25 balls), added 40 runs for the ninth wicket before hosts' captain Vinay handed the ball to Uthappa to break the partnership. Uthappa struck with his third ball.
Earlier, Gautam completed his hundred as Karnataka were bowled out for 349 in 100.5 overs. Gautam was the third centurion for the hosts after Uthappa and Karun Nair on the first day.
This was wicketkeeper-batsman Gautam's 9th first-class hundred and first of this season. The right-hander's 100 came off 118 balls with 16 boundaries.
All three batsmen made identical scores of 100 each. Karnataka's innings had five ducks and three hundreds.
The top-five batsmen of Karnataka's scorecard read - 100, 0, 0, 0, 100 and 100. While three of get combined together for 300, the rest eight managed only 49.
For Uttar Pradesh, paceman Amit Mishra finished with 6/106 in 28.5 overs.
Captain RP Singh did not take the field whole today after he pulled a hamstring yesterday and bowled only 10.4 overs. RP Singh could bat tomorrow.
