In a media release today, Cricket Australia (CA) said that Watson will miss the third and fourth ODIs in Sydney and Perth respectively and rejoin the squad for the final ODI in Adelaide.
Watson played in the opening game in Melbourne which the hosts won by six wickets. However, he was first rested for tomorrow's second ODI in Brisbane. Now he will miss three matches.
"The National Selection Panel advises that Shane Watson will miss the third and fourth Carlton Mid ODI Series matches in Sydney and Perth and re-join the squad for the final ODI in Adelaide," CA said.
Coach Darren Lehmann said: "Given Shane's workload in the past 12 months we consider it would be beneficial for him to have a longer break and continue his training program at home in Sydney ahead of the final ODI and the tour of South Africa.
"Dan Christian, who has been in excellent form in recent weeks, has been added to the ODI Squad to provide an all-round option in Shane's absence."
Christian will join the Australian squad at training in Brisbane this morning.
