No play in Karnataka-Punjab semis

Mohali, Jan 18: Rain played spoilsport as there was no play possible on the opening day of the five-day Punjab-Karnataka Ranji Trophy semi-final here Saturday.

Cold weather and rain ruled the day at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium today. After light rain in the morning had relented, there was hope for a 2PM IST start. However, rain returned and umpires decided to call off play for the day.

With the coin toss too not taking place, this game is now reduced to a four-day affair. The other semi-final in Indore is being played between Bengal and Maharashtra.

Karnataka, with six victories in a row, are favourites to progress to the final. However, Punjab, in their home conditions will not be easy for the visitors. In the group stage this season, both teams had met in Hubli and Karnataka had won easily.

In the quarter-finals, Punjab beat Jammu and Kashmir while Karnataka defeated Uttar Pradesh.

Harbhajan Singh, captain and Yuvraj Singh will be the key players for Punjab in this game. Both teams will be hoping for some action on the field tomorrow.
