Vinay takes five as Punjab collapse

Mohali, Jan 19: Captain R Vinay Kumar battled back spasms to take five wickets as Karnataka held the advantage against Punjab on the second day of the Ranji Trophy semi-final here Sunday.

The entire day of play was lost due to rain on first day. Today, Karnataka were 39/2 at stumps after bowling Punjab out for 270.

Karnataka lost KL Rahul (4) and Mayank Agarwal (0). Robin Uthappa (25 not out) and Manish Pandey (8 not out) will resume batting tomorrow.

Vinay won the toss and elected to field. His decision seemed to backfire as Punjab batsmen built a good platform in the first session.

To add to Karnataka's problems, Vinay had to walk off the field due to back spasms after bowling just 1.1 overs. But Vinay returned fit and triggered Punjab's batting collapse. From 223/3, they were bowled out for 270.

Openers Manan Vohra (51) and Jiwanjot Singh (74) had a 85-run partnership. Yuvraj Singh made 42.

Yuvraj's dismissal at 223/4 in the 52nd over allowed Karnataka to bounce back. Vinay ran through the lower order and finished with figures of 5/27 in 8 overs.

Legspinner Shreyas Gopal took 3/92 in 15 overs. Ronit More and Amit Verma had one scalp each.
