Karnataka assured of Ranji Trophy final spot

Mohali, Jan 21: Karnataka have virtually a sealed a place in the Ranji Trophy final after taking a 177-run first innings lead on a shortened fourth day's play against Punjab in the semi-final here.

Only 36.1 overs were possible on Tuesday due to bad light. Karnataka had moved from 351/5 overnight to 447/5 in 146.1 overs.

Karun Nair registered his highest first-class score of 151 not out (296 balls, 12x4) while his partner Amit Verma was unbeaten on 114 (265 balls, 17x4).

With tomorrow being the fifth and final day, the match is already in Karnataka's favour on first-inning lead.

It will be just a formality for the players to turn up at the PCA Stadium tomorrow.

This is Karnataka's first final since 2009-10 season where they lost to Mumbai in Mysore.

Come January 29, Karnataka will be facing Maharashtra in the final in Hyderabad.
