It was a day when everything went right for Vinay and his team, from the toss. Opting to field on a grassy pitch, Vinay took the new ball and struck with the very first ball - trapping Jiwanjot Singh LBW.
That was the start of good things for the hosts and at stumps on the opening day, they were 35/1 in 14 overs after bowling RoI out for 201 in 65.4 overs.
Robin Uthappa fell to Ashok Dinda for a duck in the first over. KL Rahul (28, 40 balls 6x4) and Ganesh Satish (7) are the not out batsmen.
Exacty a week ago, Vinay was holding the Ranji Trophy in Hyderabad after defeating Maharashtra by 7 wickets.
For him, the celebrations spilled over to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium as he was all smiles with an outstanding spell of swing bowling of 6/47 in 18.4 overs.
After sending back Jiwanjot LBW, Vinay dismissed Baba Aparajith (2) and Kedar Jadhav (2) in similar fashion.
Gautam Gambhir, who is aiming to return to the Indian team, battled it out in the middle for a 66-bal 22 but he too fell LBW, to Stuart Binny.
The first four wickets of RoI were all LBWs. The early jolts put RoI on the backfoot as the scoreboard read 54/4 in 23.1 overs. Binny added Mandeep Singh's (5) scalp to further worsen it to 62/5 in 28.
In danger of folding under 100, RoI were saved by Dinesh Karthik (91) and Amit Mishra (47). The duo's 67-run association for the sixth wicket helped them breach the 200-run mark.
Karthik was lucky to be handed a reprieve on 1 by umpire Rajesh Deshpande. The Tamil Nadu batsman had edged Vinay to wicketkeeper CM Gautam but the umpire failed to spot the nick despite a strong appeal from the fielders. At that stage, RoI were 14/3 and should have been 14/4 but Karthik went on to add 90 more.
The Karthik-Mishra pair was separated in the 49th over when paceman HS Sharath, returning to the team from shoulder injury, had the legspinner caught by Karun Nair at slips.
Mishra's 47 contained 7 fours and 1 six from 61 balls. Captain Harbhajan Singh lasted 46 balls for his 25 (3x4) and Karthik missed out on a century (91, 184 balls, 14x4), caught at mid-on by Robin Uthappa off Binny.
Anureet Singh and Pankaj Singh did not trouble the home team as they went back for ducks. Vinay was quick to polish off the tail in successive deliveries.
Earlier, Karnataka welcomed back Sharath and Binny in place of Amit Verma and S Aravind. RoI left out Varun Aaron, Parvez Rasool, Ankit Bawne and Natraj Behra.
Rest of India 201 all out in 65.4 overs (Dinesh Karthik 91, Amit Mishra 47, Harbhajan Singh 25, Gautam Gambhir 22, R Vinay Kumar 6/47, Stuart Binny 3/35, HS Sharath 1/34) Vs Karnataka 35/1 in 14 overs (KL Rahul 28 batting, Ganesh Satish 7 batting, Ashok Dinda 1/19)
