Gautam hits ton, Karnataka tighten grip

Bangalore, Feb 11: Karnataka tightened their grip on the Irani Cup by notching up a mammoth 405-run first innings lead on the third day against Rest of India (RoI).

On Tuesday, CM Gautam joined Stuart Binny as the second centurion for the Ranji Trophy champions. The wicketkeeper's 122 launched Karnataka to 606 all out in 145 overs.

With a huge deficit of 405, RoI finished the third day at 114/3 in 38 overs. Still 291 runs in arrears, the Harbhajan Singh-led side is in danger of innings defeat.

Today's 606 is Karnataka's highest total of the season and also their best in Irani Cup history.

India discard Gautam Gambhir failed for the next time in the match - dismissed for just 9 in the second essay. He had made 22 in the first innings.

Captain R Vinay Kumar took both RoI wickets today to take his match tally to 8. He had Gambhir caught brilliantly at slip by Manish Pandey and for the second time in the game, trapped Jiwanjot Singh (7) LBW.

Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 390/5, the hosts continued to pile on runs. Gautam notched up his 10th first-class ton. His 122 off 168 deliveries contained 17 fours and a six.

Binny could add only 7 today as he was bowled for 122 by Pankaj Singh. The right-arm paceman finished with 6/122 in 35 overs.

The 29-year-old Binny was rewarded for his century knock. He was selected in India squads for Asia Cup and ICC World Twenty20.
