Gavaskar blasts Indian team management

Mirpur, Mar 5: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was angry and blasted the team management for not picking Ishwar Pandey and Cheteshwar Pujara for the inconsequential match against Afghanistan in Asia Cup today.

With India already out of the tournament, Gavaskar wanted the team management to give a chance to paceman Pandey and batsman Pujara. However, India retained the same Playing XI for the game at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Gavaskar, speaking to the host broadcaster "Star Sports" after the toss, questioned the selection of Team India. He said he was "really baffled".

He accused the team management of guarding their "favourite" players. Gavaskar said they feared that those who come in might perform well and it would be difficult for their "favourites" to get back to the Playing XI in future.

"Are they not playing Pujara because if he comes good then one of their favourites cannot play? Are they not playing Pandey because they want to make sure the place of their favourite isn't questioned the next time the team is named? What are they afraid of?," an angry Gavaskar questioned.

Former India batsman and Gavaskar's son Rohan too was unhappy with an unchaged XI.

Both Pandey and Pujara did not play a single game in Asia Cup.
