London, July 18: Ajinkya Rahane became the 9th Indian batsman to score a Test century at Lord's when he made 103 against England at the home of cricket on the first day of the second Test here yesterday (July 17).
Rahane has achieved what Sachin Tendulkar could not. Tendulkar never managed to score a Test century at Lord's. Dilip Vengsarkar scored three hundreds at Lord's.
Vinoo Mankad was the first Indian batsman to hit a ton at Lord's. He scored 184 in 1952. This score is still the highest by an Indian at the ground.
Rahane's name will be on the Honours Boards of Lord's along with his mentor Rahul Dravid, who was the last Indian before him to register a three-figure knock there. Dravid had scored the same number of runs - 103 in 2011.
"But yes this is special because I have done this at Lord's. I was a little nervous last night because this is my first match at this ground. But I calmed down in the morning realising that all I need to do was bat patiently until I face 25-30 deliveries and then see how it will go," Rahane said after the day's play yesterday (July 17).
