Bangalore, July 30: The Karnataka Premier League (KPL) Twenty20 tournament will be played from August 28 to September 12 with the participation of 7 teams including an all-India film stars side.
The matches will be held in Bangalore, Mysore and Hubli. KPL has been named after Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the late president of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA).
There is no franchise from Karnataka's capital city Bangalore. Last time they had two teams from Bangalore. However, this time there is none.
Mangalore United, Belagavi Panthers and Bijapur Bulls are the old teams which have returned. Team Mysore, Hubli Tigers, Bellary Tuskers and Rockstars (film actors XI led by Sudeep) are the other four in the competition. KPL returns after a gap of three years. It was launched in 2009.
The KPL logo was unveiled today at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the presence of several Karnataka players including captain R Vinay Kumar, KSCA officials and former state players. Actor Sudeep was also present.
"Instituted in the memory of the former President of KSCA, the late Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the tournament now has a new logo. The Wadiyar Karnataka Premier League logo symbolises energy, high values and commitment towards cricket. Designed in the colours of the state, the logo brings in richness and a sense of belonging. The visual element of the bowled wickets wit the balls flying off, in combination with the cricket ball exudes an element of action and a sense of drama as experience in live cricket," the organisers said.
The tournament commences on August 28 in Mysore while Hubli will host the final on September 12. Earlier, KSCA had announced that Mysore would host the final.
Official song and video of the tournament 'Namma KPL' featuring Kannada actors and fans was also released on Wednesday.
Rockstars' captain Sudeep said it great for his team to compete against good and fabulous cricketers from the state. He added that they are in the tournament go give "minimal competition" and asked the players to "go easy" against them.
"It is an honour to play in KPL. It is a great opportunity for us to bowl to players like Robin Uthappa and face Abhimanyu Mithun, bowling at speeds of 140 kmph," said Sudeep.
"It is a dream to share the tournament with you wonderful cricketers," Sudeep added.
KSCA President PR Ashok Anand said, "It is indeed an exciting day today, as we reach yet another milestone in this momentous journey of the third edition of KPL."
When queried why there was no team from Bangalore, the officials said they wanted to encourage mofussil talent.
