Bangalore, Sep 6: Mangalore United's winning march in the Karbonn Smart Karnataka Premier League (KPL) was halted by Hubli Tigers in a thrilling rain-hit match here at M Chinnaswamy Stadium today.
Defending champions Mangalore, who had four wins in a row, were beaten by runs (Duckworth/Lewis method). This was their first defeat in this edition but despite this reverse, they have qualified for the semi-finals with a match to play.
Originally set a stiff target of 191, Mangalore had a revised score of 154 to chase in 16 overs after rain stopped play in the 10th over. Mangalore were 75/1 in 9.2 overs when heavy showers drove the players off.
After the rain break, Mangalore needed 79 runs to win from 40 balls. Captain Rohit Sabharwal showed signs of taking them home with big hits but his dismissal on the first ball of 14th over swung the match towards the Tigers.
In the final over bowled by captain B Akhil, Mangalore needed 23 to win. Pawan Deshpande hit 2 sixes but fell on the fifth ball. Udit Patel hit the final ball for a 6 when 10 were needed. Tigers scraped home by 3 runs.
Left-hander S Aravind was the star for Tigers with an impressive all-round show. First, he smashed 10-ball 34 not out with 3 sixes and 2 fours in the final over by Ronit More. The 20th over cost Mangalore 33 runs (6, 5 wides, 6, 6, 4, 2, 4). With the ball, the left-arm paceman took two wickets for 19.
Tigers posted 190/6 in 20 overs thanks to opener KL Rahul, who top scored with 64. He hit 5 fours and 3 sixes. R Jonathan made 31.
This was Tigers' second win in four matches while Mangalore have four victories in five games.
