Chennai, Oct 6: India and Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni now owns a football franchise in the Indian Super League (ISL), which starts on October 12.
Dhoni is the second active Indian cricketer to co-own a team after Virat Kohli, who is part of FC Goa. Dhoni was today announced as a co-owner of Chennai franchise, which also has Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan as one of the owners. Vita Dani is the other owner of the team.
Overall, Dhoni is the fourth cricketer to be a part of this 8 city-based league. Sachin Tendulkar is a co-owner of Kerala Blasters FC while Sourav Ganguly is one of the owners of Atletico de Kolkata.
"Heartthrob of Chennai, Heartthrob of the Nation; now the Co-owner of #ChennaiyinFC! Welcome @msdhoni #ChennaiyinDhoni #WelcomeMSD," the Chennai franchise announced today, on Twitter.
Chennai franchise, named Chennaiyin FC, has former Italian defender and World Cup winner Marco Materazzi as player-manager.
"Some might say that I'm a bit young to take this on, but I love football and really want to see it grow in India," Kohli had said.
