Central stun South to win Duleep Trophy

New Delhi, Nov 2: In a big turnaround on the final day, Central Zone defeated South Zone by 9 runs in a tense finish to win the Duleep Trophy final here today.

South Zone, who were on course to bag the title chasing 301, collapsed on the fifth and final day on Sunday at the Feroz Shah Kotla to go down by 9 runs. Central had conceded a 103-run first innings lead and bounced back with Robin Bist's ton in the second essay.

South had started the day at 184/1, needing 117 to win in 90 overs. But Central spinners captain Piyush Chawla (3/83) and Ali Murtaza (3/59) triggered South's collapse.

From 203/2, South were bowled out for 291 in 88.4 overs. At the lunch interval, South needed 21 with 3 wickets in hand. In the post-lunch session, Central survived some tense moments to take out the final three wickets.

South lost 9 wickets today for 97. Murtaza ended the match when he had Shreyas Gopal bowled.

KL Rahul was the stand out performer of the match with twin hundreds (185 and 130) but ended on the losing side. Rahul, who was 121 overnight, fell for 130. His wicket at 203 in the 50.2 started South's downfall.
