'Field umpires should decide on doubtful decisions'
Tuesday, August 13 2002 16:23 Hrs (IST)

Nasser Hussain Trent Bridge (England): Even as a debate is on regarding the use of technology, England captain Nasser Hussain has called upon the game's authorities to rule out shades of doubt on any controversial decision by bringing the matter to rest on the field umpires.

"If a third umpire is not sure, as was the case with Alec Stewart thing (decision), he should go back to the umpires on the field, saying we are not sure but that doesn't mean you can't give him out. If your gut feeling is that it carried, then give him out," Hussain said.

Camera was shown to lie when Virender Sehwag picked up Stewart on 48 in the slips on the fourth afternoon but the television replays showed the ball to have touched the ground.

The TV channels then carried out a test, which showed a camera, could still show the ball to have hit the ground even when a catch has been taken cleanly.

"I don't think any one of us can be hundred per cent sure if it was a clean catch or not but it doesn't mean technology should not be used," Hussain said.

"In this incident, everything was applied to the law but either the issue goes to the umpires in the middle or technology improves sufficiently to show it carried cleanly," he said.

Hussain recalled the incident against the Australians in a Headingley Test during the 1997 series when he claimed to have caught Greg Blewett in the slips but the TV replays went in the batsman's favour.

"For two Test matches, the Aussies really got stuck into me and started calling me cheat. As a player, in that situation, I would like the technology to take the blame away from me."

Hussain also expanded his point by remembering the run-out appeal against Michael Slater in the Sydney Test of the 1998-99 series when the batsman couldn't be given out because a player had come in between.

"Like the run out in Sydney when we thought we had Slater out and somebody came in the way of the stumps, somebody should go back to the umpires and say, we have used the technology, we are not sure, now you go with what your initial thoughts were."

Indian captain Saurav Ganguly said it was not proper for him to comment on the catches but said it could alter the course of a game. "I have no doubt it can alter the course of a game and one team or other would be affected because of it," he said.
