Dravid's epic knock (217) comes to an abrupt end
Sunday, September 8 2002 21:02 Hrs (IST)

London: Rahul Dravid was run out on 217 as India advanced to 486 for eight by tea on the fourth day of the fourth and final Test against England here on Sunday.

Dravid, who had looked unbeatable throughout his innings, had his knock ended when he was run out after a mix-up with batting partner Ajay Ratra. It was an agonising blow for Dravid, who only needed four more runs to equal Sunil Gavaskar's highest record score for an Indian in a Test outside India.

There was some compensation, however, with Dravid become the first batsman to notch up 1,000 runs in 2002 as well as passing Gavaskar's record for the highest number of runs by an Indian in a series in England.

With the tourists just 29 behind England's first innings total of 515 and the Oval pitch offering little encouragement for the bowlers, the match appears headed for a draw that would leave the series tied at 1-1.

Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh were the not out batsmen, both on five.
