'India victory rates higher than win against Lanka'
Tuesday, July 30 2002 11:14 Hrs (IST)

London: "That was about as good as that side could have played on a very good Lord's wicket," England captain Nasser Hussain said after England beat India by 170 runs in the first Test at Lord's on Monday.

"Credit should go to the bowlers," the Madras-born Hussain, who won the man-of-the- match award following his first innings 155 out of 487, added.

"To take 20 wickets against that batting line-up is quite something."

Meanwhile India captain Saurav Ganguly said, "England played well but we believe if we play well we have a chance of winning."

England was without injured first choice quicks Darren Gough, Andrew Caddick and Alex Tudor as well as in-form opening batsman Marcus Trescothick.

Hussain said this performance was even better than England's 10-wicket victory in their last Test, against Sri Lanka, at Old Trafford, where injuries again meant they could not select their first choice side.

"The wicket is as flat. But the (India) batting is stronger, the (England) bowling less experienced."
