Sachin Tendulkar while scoring a century on the first day of the second Test in the Cable and Wireless Series against West Indies at Port of Spain equalled Sir Donald Bradman's record of 29 centuries in his Test career. Only Sunil Gavaskar of India with 34 Test hundreds from 125 Tests is ahead of him.

Although Tendulkar has equalled Bradman's record it should be noted that the great legend had taken only 52 Tests to post 29 centuries, while Tendulkar achieved his 29 century in his 93rd Test.

Comparing any other cricketer with the great Don would be odious and would not be a healthy sign from cricketing point of view and let us therefore leave it at that.

When the little master Sunil Gavaskar went past the 29th hundred in Tests a reporter asked how it felt to break Donald Bradman's record. Gavaskar was quick to point out that he had not broken the Don's record and had only gone past Bradman's feat of most centuries in Tests.

The fact remains that Don had achieved it in fewer number of tests; as such Gavaskar felt that only when a player would reach his 30th hundred in under 52 Tests could be considered to have broken the record in real terms.

Tendulkar's break up of Test centuries reads vs Australia and Sri Lanka - 6 each, England - 5, New Zealand, South Africa and Zimbabwe - 3 each, West Indies - 2 and Pakistan - 1.

There is also a school of thought that Tendulkar has scored so many hundreds, but has not played any match winning knocks. However it should be noted that India has won seven times when he has scored a century and lost on eight occasions; while the remaining 13 have ended in draws (excluding the result of the on going Port of Spain Test).

What is worth noting from the statistical point of view about Tendulkar's 29th century is that for the first time Tendulkar was dismissed LBW (leg before the wicket) after scoring a century knock. Hitherto in the 28 centuries he had scored, he had been dismissed caught 18 times, caught and bowled once, bowled twice and remained not out on seven occasions.

Tendulkar is all set to reach another milestone viz., 8,000 test runs - as he now needs only 131 runs to accomplish that feat. Considering his present form, it would be no surprise if he achieves this feat in the current series against West Indies as still three more Tests remain to be played. He has now scored 7,869 runs @ 59.16.
