Cricket is a game full of uncertainties. This has been proved time and again. This fact was again seen in action on the 3rd day of the 2nd Test between India and West Indies at Port of Spain on 21.04.2002. India's Sachin Tendulkar who had made headlines by recording his 29th Test century and equalled Don Bradman's record in the 1st innings of India came a cropper as he was dismissed for a duck in the 2nd innings after playing mere four balls. Tendulkar thus emulated the feat of another Indian Vijay Manjrekar, who had performed the feat of scoring a century and a duck or vice versa twice in his Test career. Tendulkar scored 117 and 0 in the Port of Spain Test. He had on an earlier occasion scored 0 and 136 against Pakistan in the 1st Test at Madras in 1998-99. Gundappa Viswanath is the only Indian in this category to have accomplished this feat on debut. This provided the 13th such occasion in Indian test history. Following are the details of the 13 occasions: | Sl No | Player | 1st ings | 2nd ings | Opponent | Series Test | Venue | Year | | 1 | Mankad MH | 111 | 0 | Australia | 5th Test | Melbourne | 1947/48 | | 2 | Roy Pankaj | 140 | 0 | England | 2nd Test | Bombay | 1951/52 | | 3 | Manjrekar VL | 133 | 0 | England | 1st Test | Leeds | 1952 | | 4 | Apte ML | 0 | 163* | West Indies | 3rd Test | Port of Spain | 1952/53 | | 5 | Manjrekar VL | 108 | 0 | England | 1st Test | Madras | 1963/64 | | 6 | Viswanath GR | 0 | 137 | Australia | 2nd Test | Kanpur | 1969/70 | | 7 | Gavaskar SM | 0 | 118 | Australia | 3rd Test | Melbourne | 1977/78 | | 8 | Vengsarkar DB | 0 | 103 | England | 2nd Test | Lords | 1979 | | 9 | Sidhu NS | 116 | 0 | West Indies | 4th Test | Kingston | 1988/89 | | 10 | Azharuddin M | 0 | 109 | Pakistan | 2nd Test | Faisalabad | 1989/90 | | 11 | Mongia NR | 152 | 0 | Australia | 1st Test | Delhi | 1996/97 | | 12 | Tendulkar SR | 0 | 136 | Pakistan | 1st Test | Madras | 1998/99 | | 13 | Tendulkar SR | 117 | 0 | West Indies | 2nd Test | Port of Spain | 2001/02 |
