Imran Khan (Pakistan)
Tuesday, December 24 2002 15:52 Hrs (IST)
Imran Khan was one of the most charismatic all-rounders for Pakistan and like Kapil
Dev he was a very inspiring leader to his teammates. He bowled extremely well and
had one of the best economy rates in the world. He was also open to blooding new
talent in the team and inducted Wasim Akram into the team.
He made his One-day debut in the year 1974 against England and went on to play till
the 1992 World Cup, which Pakistan won under his captaincy. He played a total of 28
World Cup matches and scored 666 runs at an average of 35.05. He also took 41
wickets at an economy rate of 3.80. He could play havoc coming down at any batting
order on his day. He had the gift of swinging the ball both ways and had an
unbeatable outswinger.
His highest score was 102. In the 1983 World Cup match against Sri Lanka at
Headingley, Leeds, he smashed an unbeaten 102 to win the match for Pakistan by 11
runs. His best bowling figures were four for 37 off eight overs against West Indies
in 1987 and again Pakistan won, this time by one wicket.
He played his last World Cup match in 1992 against England. This time too, he played
a crucial role in Pakistan’s victory when he top scored for Pakistan with 72.
Imran Khan will be remembered as one of the more successful captains in Pakistan
cricket, who turned a volatile team into a world-class fighting unit.
