India's World Cup chances depend on batting, says Kapil
Wednesday, February 5 2003 16:45 Hrs (IST)

Nagpur: Former Indian captain and coach, Kapil Dev is of the view that India's chances of winning the 2003 World Cup depended largely on its batting strength.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, the Wisden Indian-cricketer-of-the-century said since the team lacked quality strike bowlers and good all-rounders, it was for the batsmen to perform.

He also named skipper Saurav Ganguly, maestro Sachin Tendulkar, dashing Virender Sehwag, consistent Rahul Dravid and new heroes Yuvraj Singh and Mohammed Kaif as batsmen to watch.

"They should take upon themselves the responsibility of winning matches by posting good scores. I hope they will play to the best of their ability," he added.

Rating the Ganguly-led team as 1000 times better than the 1983 World Cup winning team led by himself, Kapil said it is really a team with full of talent and proven capabilities.

He also gave some tips to the members of the team that are in South Africa for the big event. "They should develop positive attitude. Watch video recordings of the best innings played in the past. And more importantly, forget the recent disastrous series in New Zealand as a bad dream. They should not take the game as a burden but should thoroughly enjoy playing it," he advised.

However, Kapil brushed aside the queries regarding the batting order saying, "We should leave it to the team management as they are the best judges of the situation."
