Sehwag injures index finger, X-rays reveal no fracture
Wednesday, March 5 2003 17:51 Hrs (IST)
Cape Town: India received an injury scare ahead of the World Cup Super Sixes when
opening batsman Virender Sehwag hurt the index finger of his right hand during
training on Wednesday.
X-rays taken later in hospital showed there was no fracture, but the swelling on the
finger meant he may be doubtful for Friday's Super Sixes opener against Kenya at
Newlands.
"Our major worry was that Sehwag may have had a fracture," team official Amrit
Mathur said.
"But I have just heard from the hospital that the X-rays are clear. The finger is
obviously a bit sore but it is not serious."
Physiotherapist Andrew Leipus will monitor Sehwag's progress closely, but a final
decision on whether he will play Friday's day-night game will be taken a few hours
before the match, Mathur said.
Sehwag, 24, sustained the injury during the team's fielding practice after a session
at the Newlands nets.
He had been hurt on the same right hand on Tuesday by a rising ball from Javagal
Srinath while batting in the nets.
