'Left-handed' delights to grace final ceremony
Saturday, March 15 2003 16:16 Hrs (IST)
Johannesburg: Two of cricket's brightest stars -- Sir Garfield Sobers and Graeme
Pollock – will descend down on the Wanderers Stadium on March 23, the World Cup
final, to give away the top individual awards at a grand presentation ceremony.
Sobers will present the man-of-the-tournament award – a gold trophy worth Rand
500,000 - and Graeme Pollock will hand over a special gold watch to the man-of-the-
match, according to a media release by the organisers here on Saturday.
Ali Bacher, executive director of CWC 2003, said, "There is no question that Gary
and Graeme are the two greatest left-hand batsmen the game has seen. There is also
no debate that Gary Sobers is the greatest all-rounder of all
time."
"It will be an honour therefore to have two truly greats of the game on the podium
after the final."
The man-of-the-tournament is decided according to a points system that has run from
the first match of World Cup.
Each man-of-the-match receives 3 points and two players in closest contention in
each match earn 2 and 1 point respectively.
The man-of-the-tournament is the player with the highest aggregate of points. At
this stage, the top three on the list are India's Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav
Ganguly, and Sri Lanka's Chaminda Vaas.
