Bangalore:
"It's emotional to get back into the Indian team bus", former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said today on his appointment as Consultant to the Indian team for the series against Australia as he began the process of interaction with team management digging into his invaluable experience.
"It's emotional to get back into the Indian team bus after you put off your bats and pads", the little master said,a day after the BCCI-appointed assignment before an all-important four test match series against the Aussies.
"It's exciting to see all younger and eager faces", he told reporters. While it's not easy to take up the job at the eleventh hour as the first Test is starting here tomorrow,Gavaskar said he has been following the team's performance in the recent one-day engagements.
In his new role, he would be available for the team for consultations, discussions and help, he said. "The role evolves".
" Improvements that the team needs to work on would be discussed, he added. "I have ideas for the team but first I will discuss them with the team management."
On the India-Australia series, Gavaskar said the Aussies have lost "massive amount of experience" following the retirement of Steve Waugh and the absence of Ricky Ponting.
"That's never easy to recoup. In a way that will also help them. It's not going to easy." He said he does not believe that Sachin Tendulkar's tennis elbow was because he used heavy bat.
"Sometimes, when you play a long innings and you are keen to do well, you tend to grip the bat harder resulting in strain," he observed.
