Aussie pacers blow away Indian top order
Thursday, October 7 2004 17:36 Hrs (IST)
By OUR CORRESPONDENT

Bangalore: The threat of follow-on is looming large over India as they crashed to 150 for six against Australia on the second day of the first Test here today. India was struck by a resurgent McGrath who sent back Aakash Chopra and Rahul Dravid to the pavilion for naught.

Australia were propped up by the centuries of debutant Michael Clarke and stand-in-captain Adam Gilchrist.

India allowed the hosts to put up a huge total of 474 on a pitch that is expected to crumble during the latter stages of the match. India still need 125 runs to avoid follow-on.

It was Aussie fast bowlers Glenn McGrath (3/37) and Michael Kasprowicz (2/23) who destroyed the Indian top order to gain the upper hand for Australia.

When Virender Sehwag (39) and Sourav Ganguly (45) got going, India appeared to be on course for a huge total. But just when they looked set and started playing shots, Kasprowicz got them both.

The battle between VVS Laxman and Shane Warne ended in victory for the latter as a spiteful leg break found it's way to the off bail. Laxman, who was the victor when they met last time proved good foil for Warne as he drove and pulled him often. But Warne's patience and understanding of the conditions paid off in the end.
